Scissor work for curly coats

Doodle and curly coat grooming prices in Los Angeles.

Doodles and poodles are everywhere in Los Angeles, and their coats never stop growing. They cost more to groom than a smooth coat because every inch needs to be combed through and shaped by hand.

$95 to $195per groom

Why curly coats cost more.

The biggest lever you control is how well the coat is brushed between appointments.

  • Groomers comb out the whole coat before the bath, and a dense coat can take a long time.
  • Scissor shaping on the face, ears and legs is slower than clipping and priced to match.
  • Mats cost money. A dog arriving with tight tangles may need a shorter clip and a de-matting fee.
  • Size ranges from mini to standard, so ask for a price by weight and not a flat doodle rate.
  • Booking every five to six weeks usually costs less across a year than long gaps and rescue grooms.
  • A slicker brush and a metal comb used a few times a week is the cheapest upgrade you can make.

What does a goldendoodle groom cost in Los Angeles?

Most fall between about $95 and $195. A standard-size dog with a tangled coat sits at the high end.

Why is a doodle more expensive than a lab?

A lab needs a bath and a brush. A doodle needs a bath, a long brush-out and a hand-finished haircut, which adds up to much more labor.

Can I keep a long teddy-bear cut in a dry climate?

You can if you brush often. Many owners go shorter in summer because dust, foxtails and tangles collect in a long coat.

Is it cheaper to shave a matted doodle?

Sometimes, since it avoids hours of de-matting. The groomer will explain when a short clip is kinder to the skin.
